So this warm wave has been going on now 4 days (yessss). Today was another 80 degree afternoon. Temped to open up some bubbles I instead opted for the 2007 Veramonte Chardonnay "Reserva". Besides, today I was learning about Chile and Chilean wine regions and I find one of the best ways to learn about a region is to taste wines from that region while (or right after) you are studying about it. So a good way to understand Chilean Chardonnay is to drink one! And I’m not gonna lie to you, it was 80 degrees out, so a nice crisp Chard sounded pretty thirst quenching and probably a better choice than a Chilean Cab. Did I mention I was outside while both studying and tasting??? I’ll save the Cab for a rainy day, which is pretty commonplace here in Portland, OR.
I was a bit skeptical at first because I love me some Chard, and I will pay good money for a good one. And (to be honest) since this one was only $10, I didn’t have super high expectations for it… but boy was I wrong. Watch out CA Chards (referring to many overpriced Chards, not oak factor), this one has a lot going for it… and for $10 you just can't beat that!
The ambiance:
Of course I was influenced by my favorite weather, sunny, 80 degrees and chilling in my backyard, so that’s enough to make this girl happy, but drinking that Chard certainly added to the overall ambiance.
The details:
2007 Veramonte Chardonnay "Reserva"
100% Chardonnay from the Casablanca Valley in Chile
Price: $10
The wine was a dark straw color but very clear. Slight hints of toasty overtones with lots of lemon, green apple, and pineapple on the nose. The palate was crisp yet smooth with hints of soft melon and beautiful lingering acidity. The wine finished dry, bright, and lingered on and on.
I keep reading that Chile makes some of the best value wines out there and this wine proved that. So for 10 bucks I’m gonna go stock up on this tasty Chard for the summertime!
